The Avenger first appeared in “The Avenger” #1, published by Magazine Enterprises in 1941. Created by writer Paul Ernst under the pseudonym “Kenneth Robeson,” The Avenger was a pulp hero who also transitioned into the comic book medium during the Golden Age of comics.

The character of The Avenger, whose real name was Richard Henry Benson, had a tragic origin story. Benson was a wealthy adventurer and crime-fighting vigilante who witnessed his wife and daughter killed by criminals. This traumatic event left his face frozen in a permanent, eerie laugh-like expression due to the shock. He used facial putty and makeup to assume various disguises.

As The Avenger, Benson assembled a team of experts, each with their own unique skills, forming “Justice, Inc.” Together, they fought against various criminals, spies, and threats, with The Avenger being a master of disguise and possessing excellent detective skills.

The character was known for wearing a wide-brimmed slouch hat, a black cape, and a small domino mask to conceal his identity while operating as a vigilante.
